Rear Window writer dies.
John Michael Hayes adapted four films for Alfred Hitchcock: "Rear Window" (1954), "To Catch a Thief" (1955), "The Trouble With Harry" (1955), and the 1956 remake of "The Man Who Knew Too Much." He received an Oscar nomination for "Rear Window," as well as an Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers of America, and a Writer's Guild nomination.
Besides his work for Hitchcock, he was known for writing the screenplay for "Peyton Place" (1957), which got him another Oscar nomination and Writers Guild nomination.
He also received a Writer's Guild nomination for "The Man Who Knew Too Much."
In interviews over the years, Mr. Hayes was forthright about what it was like to write for Mr. Hitchcock. "I enjoyed working with him professionally, but off the screen he wasn't so likable," he told The Worcester Telegram & Gazette in 1999. "He was egotistical to the point of madness."
