Mainly doing this review to bump the stupid one off the bottom of the list. Because I'm odd that way.
Don't let my petty reasoning deter you from understanding that I indeed believe that SWS deserves a 5 star rating as a movie persona. Creating one of the most memorable characters ever committed to film in the movie AMERICAN PIE, it is Scott's Stifler which will remain in movie lover's minds long after the lesser important and more topically relevant characters of artsy Oscar minded movies will.
Whether you love him or hate him, the AMERICAN PIE franchise wasn't continued on in direct-to-DVD form based on Jim or any of the other guys. It was Steve Stifler, that a**hole you went to high school with who was so big of a douche and yet still managed inexplicably to retain his coveted standing with the males and females in attendance. In the end, you never really hate the guy. You just hate that you weren't able to BE that guy for even a small portion of your existence.
Scott has an essence to him which makes him instantly recognized despite never gaining huge movie star paychecks. In watching previews for the 2008 fall season over the course of this summer's movie going, Scott welcome a raucous reaction from the crowd in the trailer for ROLE MODELS. Much like his co-star in that movie, Paul Rudd, he has a following which is staunch and loyal, even if most of what he does curls the toe hairs of uptight redneck patriarchs. (Their dumbass kids, however, love the guy. Something that I find amusing, since Scott's main claim to fame is making fun of an upper-middle class version of them.)
At some point, I'd really like to see him get the opportunity to do something a little more drama focused, and not within the realm of the little-known or little-seen indie. The dimpled chin and the sh*t-eating grin might pigeon hole him into a particular character for the rest of his career, but what most people forget is just how hard it is to be successfully good at comedy. You can't overlook a multi-winner in that regard.
