The Cannes Film Festival, set to kick off screenings on May 14, awarded the prestigious first slot to Fernando Meirelles' Blindness, in which Julianne Moore stars as the only remaining person unaffected when an entire city's population is struck blind. Spielberg Dreaming of a Better Universe?

Quoted by Vanity Fair regarding his relationship with Paramount execs, "these people are a nightmare", it's no secret that David Geffen wants out, a departure that has opened the door for Spielberg and Dreamworks. With huge hits like Transformers and the upcoming Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull as well as critically aclaimed pieces like Munich, Spielberg is ideally situated to shop Dreamworks around, with speculation ranging from acquisition of Universal to a return to Dreamworks using other studios purely for distribution. Speed Racer Already Running On Fumes

With a paltry $33 million worldwide, Speed Racer likely will struggle to cover its $120 million price tag; "Unfortunately, it didn't perform to our expectations," said Warner Brothers Exec Dan Fellman. Racer, the lastest Wachowski brothers project, was third on its opening weekend worldwide behind the high-flying Iron Man (nearly $90 million), and quirky marriage comedy What Happens in Vegas (over $40 million). Things don't get easier for Speed Racer With The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian opening on May 16 and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull just six days later. Prince Caspian Seizes Crown

With a good - but not great - opening haul of nearly $60 million, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian ascended to number one at the box office, knocking off Marvel's Iron Man which still took in over $30 million in its third week. Running solid in third was What Happens in Vegas, with Speed Racer slipping to fourth in the largest drop in ticket sales of nearly 60%. Only days away is the highly anticipated Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. (contributed by Thom Williams)

Over New Indy Flick, Critics Crack Whip

As the world eagerly awaits Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, some verdicts are in, and the reviews are mixed. As reported by Wade Major of boxoffice.com, "Utterly unnecessary, unbelievably uninspired and preposterous beyond all imagination..." However, Ebert states, "I can say that if you liked the other Indiana Jones movies, you will like this one..." In yet another review, by Scott Holleran at boxofficemojo.com, "...[the film]is built for action-adventure and it delivers. Beyond that, the barely intelligible theme... is actually quite awful."
