Can you name the Top 10 Westerns?

The American Film Institute has announced that it will not just release a Top 100 films list, but will split the list into a Top Ten in several catagories. Tune in to slay the dragon, search for the ring, get the girl, travel to another planet, shoot 'em up, rob a bank, hit a home run, fight for what you believe, solve the perfect murder, and follow the hero until he makes his final stand. The catagories will include the Top 10 Animation, Fantasy and Sci-Fi films, as well as the best Romatic Comedies, Ganster films and Westerns. The remaining catagories are Sports, Courtroom Drama, Mysteries, and Epics. Start making your lists and compare to the AFI lists in June.

You can stop whining now!

Fans of John Carpenter who were shocked at Rob Zombie's reinterpretation of his classic "Halloween," can take satisfaction that shooting will soon begin on a new John Carpenter film. After a seven-year absence, Carpenter is sent to start casting "L.A. Gothic," which is five interwoven stories of high-octane horror centering on a vengeful ex-priest's efforts to protect his teenage daughter from the supernatural evils of L.A.'s dark side.

Things are not looking good for Blade

Actor Wesley Snipes is on trial just down the road in Ocala. The 45-year-old actor allegedly stopped filing returns, illegally sought refunds totaling $11 million for 1996 and 1997 taxes paid, and drew fake checks to pay the U.S. Treasury. His fantastic weapons may not be enough to sway an all-white Jury in this Klan and Neo-Nazi haven. The trial is expected to bore the jury for a month. The judge reportedly dozed off a dozen times yesterday.

Argento does new flick in English

Vincent Gallo of Brown Bunny fame will join Asia Argento and Ray Liotta in a new Dario Argento production this year. The film will bring Italian giallo to a whole new market. Gallo will play a serial killer with "a taste for attractive women," as the Hollywood Reporter describes it. Liotta, who hopefully has a better role than in Wild Hogs, will play a detective on his tail. There is no word yet on Asia's role in the film. Shooting begins next month.

Christian Bale in the new T4: Terminator Salvation

From Tim: The Terminator film titled " Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins " is now showing that Christian Bale could possibly be the next John Connor. Set for a June 2009 release date, the casting has been constantly changing over the past few months at one time even rumored to be bringing back Edward Furlong. My biggest question is WHO is going to be the Terminator? Guess we will have to wait until that news surfaces.

A promise unfulfilled

The facts surrounding Heath Ledgers death may never be certain. It is probably destined to join the mystery surrounding Marilyn Monroe or Anna Nicole Smile. But, like James Dean, the untimely death will have robbed all movie lovers of someone who was destined to greatness. Sure, he was cute, but it was his talent displayed in films like Brokeback Mountain that makes him stand out. We will have to wait to see if he makes us forget Jack Nicholson's Joker. I'm betting he will.

BAFTA Awards to be given on February 10th

"Atonement" dominated the race for the British Academy Film Awards, with nominations in 14 categories, including best picture, actor, actress and director. Also nominated multiple times is "No Country for Old Men," "There Will Be Blood" and "The Bourne Ultimatum." BBC America will show the ceremony from London's Royal Opera House. It may be the only chance we have to see the stars walk down a red carpet this year.

The Downfall of Young Hollywood?

From Jessica The Film Junkie:We have become used to the barrage of starlets, has-beens and the famous-for-being-famous entering rehab and swearing off the sauce. These people either seemed destined for such a downfall (in the case of Mel Gibson or Nick Nolte) or appeared as though this was simply a speedbump on their eventual road to success (like Lindsay Lohan and Michelle Rodriguez). Yet lately, celebrities and drugs have become more tragedy than gossip. Brad Renfro, a former teen star best known for 'The Client' and 'Apt Pupil', was found dead at the age of 25 due to an apparent drug overdose as reported by source. Renfro was years past his 15 minutes and had fallen into the comforting world of dependency. Heath Ledger, on the other hand, was reaching the pinnacle of success with his Oscar nomination for 'Brokeback Mountain' and his new film 'The Dark Knight; which is sure to be a smash hit. Ledger was found surrounded by legal and illegal drugs at the time of his death (source). Both of these tragedies bring to mind just how serious addiction really is; in an age when we laugh off the exploits of the expected screw-ups, tragedies like Ledger and Renfro must make us pause and wonder: what is young Hollywood coming to? Is there any escape?

Oscar Nominations Favor The Small and Serious

From Jessica, The Film Junkie: The nominations are in and this year Oscar is leaning toward the dark and intense films of 2007 over lighter fare. The Best Picture nominees range are political thriller 'Michael Clayton', modern western 'No Country For Old Men', oil saga 'There Will Be Blood' and tortured love story 'Atonement'. The one bright spot among these bleak entries is the teen pregnancy comedy 'Juno' IMDB. It seems that even though Iraq war films did not sit well with the masses, we are favoring the hard-hitting over the fantastic. Perhaps that is message enough.

Cameron makes sure Avator isnt another Aliens

From Tim: After meeting with veteran actor Michael Biehn about casting him as Col. Quaritch in the upcoming film Avator, James Cameron decided to pass. The decision was made since Sigourney Weaver had already been cast and Weaver and Biehn starred in the 1986 sci-fi hit Aliens together. Cameron wants to make sure that people do not think its another film like it. Avator does feature a some what similiar plot to Aliens but come on...we all know its not.
Avator will feature a new type of digital 3-D which is suppose to give audiences a new film experience. This is also James Cameron's first film he is directing since Titanic. Biehn has also starred in other Cameron flicks such as The Terminator and The Abyss.

"No Country" will likely win the big one

Last Night's Screen Actor's Guild Award for the cast, and a Supporting Actor win for Javier Bardem, combined with the Directing Award from the Director's Guild on Saturday seemed to seal the deal for No Country For Old Men. The film had garned almost every critic's award for best film this year, and it is very likely that they will take home several Oscars. One always has to remember that Brokeback Mountain swept everything too, and the Academy voters went out in left field.

Another Season Of The Two Coreys Is A GO!

From Tim:Its been confirmed......A&E has ordered another 10 episodes of The Two Coreys starring former child stars Corey Haim and Corey Feldman. I guess I should make mention of Feldman's extremely annoying wife Susie Feldman as well.

This time the Coreys will try to see if they can work through their differences and get to work or if they will be finished as a team forever. The episodes will be 30 minutes in length and A&E is shooting for a spring premiere. The Two Coreys are most known for doing several 80's films together including The Lost Boys and License to Drive.

There will be over 350 films that are Oscar-worthy presented over the next month. Many have not been reviewed in Matchflick. Snipes Case goes to Jury

The trial was supposed to take a month, but the prosecution rested last week, and the defense called no witnesses, so the tax evasion trial of Wesley Snipes in Ocala is in the hands of the jury. No Mohammed Ali, no Sylvester Stallone, and not even Snipes himself on the stand. It should only be a day or two before we see if Snipes is heading for prison for up to 16 years. Maybe he can do a follow-up to Undisputed.

Direct-to-DVD not just for horror movies

There were 675 movies released direct-to-DVD last year. It is now 6% of the $15 billion DVD market. Studios have discovered that they can capitalize on hit movies and produce cheap versions for less than $10 million by skipping the major stars. Leave out "The Rock" and release a prequel to "The Scorpion King" for the DVD, rental and cable market. They will release a direct-to-DVD "Get Smart" movie at the same time as the movie version without Steve Carell. Not spending money on big stars and marketing, the studios have found a way to make some big bucks, so look for more direct-to-DVD in the future.
