To Offend, Or To Still Offend?
The Ron Howard-directed adaptation of "The Da Vinci Code," Dan Brown's runaway best-seller, is shrouded in secrecy following pressure from religious groups to tone down the more controversial aspects of the book; I won't name them here in case any readers are unfamiliar with the story. The New York Times reports on the tug-of-war with the filmmakers in the middle: either annoy religious groups, who proved their box office power with THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST, or alienate fans of "The Da Vinci Code," who are apparently so numerous that only the Bible has sold more copies.

Cage and Stone To Make 9/11 Film
It's taken almost four years, but here's our first big studio picture on September 11, 2001. Nicolas Cage will star in the Oliver Stone film about two Port Authority police officers trapped in World Trade Center rubble after the collapse of the two buildings. Cage's character, real-life sergeant John McLoughlin, and officer William J. Jimeno are thought to be the last people rescued. For the love of Pete, this had better be good or 9 million angry New Yorkers will storm Oliver Stone's beach house.

Actor Jon Heder, star of the beloved NAPOLEON DYNAMITE, will next be seen in the Reese Witherspoon/Mark Ruffalo romantic comedy about a man who falls in love with the ghost of a woman who used to live in his apartment. Hmmm. Decide for yourself if this is cute or creepy by watching the trailer here, and look for Heder as the helpful, spirit-friendly pal.

More Movies About 9/11
With the fourth anniversary of 9/11 approaching, studios are suddenly rushing to dramatize the events in both film and television. This story from Entertainment Weekly details the efforts of three major studios -- Universal, with FLIGHT 93, about the events on the plane that crashed in Pennsylvania, to be directed by Paul Greengrass (THE BOURNE SUPREMACY); Paramount, with Oliver Stone's film on two Port Authority police officers trapped in World Trade Center rubble, starring Nicolas Cage; and Columbia, which has optioned "102 Minutes," a book by two New York Times reporters on the time between the crash of the first plane into the WTC and the subsequent collapse of the tower.

Guest + Gervais = True Love?
Fans of Ricky Gervais and his gem of a show, "The Office," and those who love Christopher Guest's comedic "documentaries," like BEST IN SHOW and A MIGHTY WIND, have reason to rejoice today, according to Entertainment Weekly. Gervais is set to join the cast of Guest's next film, FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION, which will send up Hollywood's orgy of self-congratulation known as the awards season. Gervais and Guest's regulars, like Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara, will portray the cast and crew of an indie film called HOME FOR PURIM. Personally, I try to be home for Yom Kippur, and I'm not even Jewish.
