Spielberg's Next Project

While WAR OF THE WORLDS racks up the ticket sales (despite star Tom Cruise's recent public bouts with insanity), director Steven Spielberg has already begun shooting on his next film. Set to release late this December, the film concerns a team of Mossad hit men with the mission of killing Palestinian terrorists following the murder of Israeli athletes at the 1972 Olympics. Eric Bana, Daniel Craig, Geoffrey Rush, Mathieu Kassovitz, Hanns Zischler, and Ciaran Hinds star. For more, read this story from the New York Times.

CAPOTE Set For Release

This is gonna be good. Sony Pictures Classics announced today the September 30 release of CAPOTE, directed by Bennett Miller and starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, Catherine Keener, and Chris Cooper. In 1959, famous writer Truman Capote (Hoffman) hears of the gruesome murder of the Clutter family of Holcomb, Kansas and travels to their town to investigate, with his childhood friend Harper Lee (Keener) in tow. (You know Capote as the author of "Breakfast at Tiffany's" and Lee as the author of "To Kill A Mockingbird," in which the character of Dill is rumored to be based on Capote. Nifty, ain't it? And Capote's birthday is same as the release date.) After arriving in Holcomb, Capote gets tangled up in the life of Perry Smith (Clifton Collins Jr.), one of the accused killers; Capote's findings are later published in the truly excellent and disturbing book "In Cold Blood." CAPOTE's screenplay is by Dan Futterman, based on the book of the same name by Gerald Clarke.

GLADIATOR II?

On press to promote his new film THE ISLAND, Djimon Hounsou revealed that there may be a sequel to Ridley Scott's 2000 mega-hit GLADIATOR. Whether or not Russell Crowe, whose character Maximus perished at the end of the first film, will participate remains to be seen. For more details, read here.

San Francisco: A Movie Paradise

George Lucas and his disparate film companies -- Lucasfilm, LucasArts, and Industrial Light and Magic -- have recently converged on one location for the first time in the city of San Francisco. Their new location on a former Army post heralds a rebirth in Bay area film making (one example: Francis Ford Coppola's company American Zoetrope was once here, but closed doors in December 2004). And if that weren't enough, the Wayans family (please see "In Living Color" if you haven't already) is looking to open a massive "film studio and entertainment complex" in nearby Oakland. A Notorious B.I.G. Movie

A film about murdered rapper Notorious B.I.G. is now in the works, according to Entertainment Weekly. Journalist Cheo Hodari Coker is writing the script for Fox Searchlight, while Antoine Fuqua, TRAINING DAY director, is in talks to direct. No word on who would play B.I.G. yet, but I think it's safe to assume it won't be DJ Qualls.

Captain Jack Will Get You High Tonight

Billy Joel has nothing to do with this news item, but the headline works. On to the story: according to the latest issue of Us Weekly, Keith Richards has agreed to play Captain Jack Sparrow's father in a sequel to PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN. Johnny Depp, who plays Captain Jack, based his character on the Rolling Stones guitarist.

Altman At Work On Lake Wobegon

Today's New York Times features this story about Robert Altman's next project, an ensemble piece based on Garrison Keillor's long-running radio show "A Prairie Home Companion." With a cast that includes Meryl Streep, Kevin Kline, Lily Tomlin, John C. Reilly, Maya Rudolph, Tommy Lee Jones, and Lindsay Lohan, the as yet untitled film will be sure to draw its audience from a wide swath of viewers.

Trailer Park

It's time again for a nice dose of trailers, those fun little distractions while you're chained to a desk at work and should be creating a spread sheet in Excel. THE BAXTER stars Michael Showalter and Elizabeth Banks and is billed as a romantic comedy for anyone who's ever been dumped. Natalie Portman is a British revolutionary in V FOR VENDETTA, a Wachowski Brothers film (those nice men who brought you THE MATRIX). Hmmm, I don't think it's a coincidence that a film about people hoping to blow up Parliament opens November 4, the day before Guy Fawkes Day. Jennifer Aniston realizes her family inspired THE GRADUATE in RUMOR HAS IT, and puts her own wedding plans on hold until she can get to the bottom of things. How can you put wedding plans on hold when your fiance is Mark Ruffalo?

Mel Gibson Likes The Old Languages

Mel Gibson has struck a deal with Disney to release his next film, APOCALYPTO, which will have dialogue entirely in Mayan dialect. THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST, you may remember, was in Aramic, Hebrew, and Latin with subtitles. APOCALYPTO is set to begin shooting on location in Mexico this October and will star local actors.
