Could Be Cool, Could Suck
I'm back from vacation and shamelessly stealing that headline from Ilana. Ahem. On to the news: Molly Ringwald is considering a sequel to the beloved John Hughes film SIXTEEN CANDLES. Provided they include Long Duck Dong on this one, I'm happy.

You've Heard Of Threeways?
THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE, a 1972 disaster flick that's so bad it's good, is about to get two re-make treatments, one on TV and the other on the big screen (making three versions -- get it?). EW.com has the scoop on who's starring in the Wolfgang Petersen movie: Richard Dreyfuss, Kurt Russell, Emmy Rossum, Josh Lucas (pictured at left), and Andre Braugher may sign as the doomed vessel's captain. Shooting is scheduled to begin on June 18.

Remember WALK LIKE A MAN?
That's the one where Howie Mandel is raised by wolves and then has to learn about living among humans. Well, HOMIE SPUMONI kind of has that fish out of water thing going on. Donald Faison (the delightful Dr. Turk from "Scrubs") will star in this independent comedy about a black man raised as an Italian goombah type. The rest of the cast includes Joey Fatone from *NSYNC and Jamie-Lynn Discala...and Whoopi Goldberg?!

Oh Draconian Devil!
You probably haven't heard of this tiny, little book called "The DaVinci Code" by Dan Brown, but Ron Howard has and he's starting filming the movie adaptation this month. The cast includes Tom Hanks as Robert Langdon, Audrey Tautou as Sophie Neveu, Ian McKellan as Sir Leigh Teabing, Alfred Molina as Bishop Aringarosa, Jean Reno as Bezu Fache, and Paul Bettany (AKA my neighbor and future friend) as Silas the murderous albino. This character, incidentally, did not make albinos very happy. You can watch the trailer here.

Notable Quoteables!
This week the American Film Institute unveiled its list of the greatest 100 movie quotes of all time. You may be interested to see a few were spoken by the same actor in different films, and a few films had more than one appearance on the list. I don't know about you, but I'm pretty disappointed nothing from GHOSTBUSTERS made it. What's wrong with "We've been going about this all wrong, this Mr. Stay Puft's okay, he's a sailor, he's in New York, we get this guy laid we won't have any trouble." I mean, really?!

Where Are The Wild Things?
The film adaptation of Maurice Sendak's classic children's book, "Where The Wild Things Are," has a long and circuitous history. Back in the '80s it was in development at Disney, then at Columbia, and was finally picked up by Universal out of turnaround in 1999. Six years later, we're a little closer to seeing the film actually made. Spike Jonez (BEING JOHN MALKOVICH) is directing and Dave Eggers is writing, but according to the most recent news I could find online, this hadn't started production as of October 2003. It looks as though this was originally to be a CGI-animated project but will now be live action. Tom Hanks, one of the producers, may play a role but this is not a certainty. 10 Out Of 525,600 Minutes
Last Friday I was privy to an exclusive preview of RENT, the Christopher Columbus-directed film adaptation of the Broadway musical due November 11, 2005. Based loosely on Puccini's opera La Boheme, RENT tells the story of bohemians struggling in New York City's East Village. The ten minutes of footage I saw was promising -- having not seen the play itself, I was viewing as a novice, but the film looks like it will have the ring of authenticity (part of it was filmed on location, while some in the not-at-all-similar city of San Francisco) and a stirring score and story.

What's it to ya, punk?
Oh, I remember the days when "punk" did not conjure images of Ashton Kutcher giggling in a trucker hat while aggravating his celebrity friends. Those sweet, sweet days of yore. The Independent Film Channel remembers too, and wants you to see the kick-ass documentary "PUNK: attitude." It premieres on IFC Saturday, July 9 at 10 pm ET/11 pm PT on IFC. In the words of Corey Green, the MatchFlick review manager, you should set your TiVOs and DVRs to stun and
record it!
