Do Oompa Loompas scare you?

I love Roald Dahl's book "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," but am not crazy about WILLA WONKA AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY (1971), which features Gene Wilder in the title role. This glimpse of Tim Burton's upcoming version features a satisfyingly strange-looking Johnny Depp as the crazed chocolate-making genius. This is about as perfect a combination of source material and film makers as you can get.

King Kong, you sweet talker, you

Last December I went through a strange combination of elation and depression. Elation because RETURN OF THE KING was finally released, and depression because it was the final installment in the THE LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy. What was left to look forward to?! Take heart -- this December brings us Peter Jackson's remake of 1933 classic KING KONG (let's forget that other one with Jessica Lange), which stars Naomi Watts, Adrien Brody, Jack Black, and Andy Serkis. After brilliantly bringing Gollum to life, Serkis is now going ape as Kong himself. Sorry, bad joke. Anyway, get your Jackson fix now by checking out this very cool site run by the same folks who helmed theonering.net. Back during the heady LOTR days, these guys developed such a good relationship with Jackson and his team that they ended up having a giant Oscar party in LA that the whole cast attended after RETURN OF THE KING won best picture.

Horton the elephant heard a small noise

Looks like another Dr. Seuss book is about to get the movie treatment, this time in CGI. I just read here that Audrey Geisel, Dr. Seuss's widow (real name: Ted Geisel) has given the rights for the film adaptation to the same team behind recent release ROBOTS.

Watch

Okay, Star Wars fans, some of you may not like Fox's prime-time sudser "The OC." Or some of you, like me, may love it. Probably none of you enjoy referring to it as "The Mutha F'in OC" like I do. Regardless, this week Star Wars fans should tune in to Fox at 8 PM because the new two minute trailer for STAR WARS: EPISODE III -- REVENGE OF THE SITH premieres at some point during the episode. The next day it will be in theaters along with Fox's new animated feature ROBOTS, but c'mon, you don't want to wait that long! I first read the story here. If you're not an Entertainment Weekly subscriber the link may not work.

OK, so you missed it on The OC...

Or if you don't want to pay to see ROBOTS (looking forward to your review, Nick), you can now catch the EPISODE III trailer here. Am I crazy or deluded to think this one might redeem the first two prequels? Will Chewie cause Jar Jar's demise? Fingers crossed...

Singin' in the Shire?

Plans are under way for THE LORD OF THE RINGS to be turned into a stage musical. No, that's not a joke. It's set to open in Toronto next March, and then move on to London. I don't know...this could be amazing or horrifying.

Third time's the charm

Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese are teamed up for their third consecutive project, THE DEPARTED, a film about Boston's crime world. Also starring: Jack Nicholson, Matt Damon; Anthony Anderson is in talks. UPDATE: Thanks to my zombie-riffic buddy Nick, I can now tell you that this is a re-make of INFERNAL AFFAIRS, which he assures me is awesome.

For God's sake, Reverend!

How ironic--wasn't it just last week that Corey and I were wondering where Steve Guttenberg had gone off to? Here's your answer: according to today's TV Guide news, he's appearing in a made-for TV remake of THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE (1972). If you haven't seen it, rent both that and AIRPLANE! (1980) to see what inspired some of the jokes in the latter. NBC has bought the remake, and it's said they will most likely air the movie before Wolfgang Peterson releases his big-screen remake in the summer of '06. First dueling projects about Alexander the Great and now this?

It's love, space-style

I just read that George Lucas is comparing EPISODE III to TITANIC, and says this is a much more emotional, character-driven film. What I hear from Star Wars fans is the more basic hope that it doesn't suck. I will say that the new trailer looks mighty promising.

Apparently comic book movies make money...?

Joss Whedon of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" fame has signed to direct the long-discussed film version of WONDER WOMAN. No word yet on who will star as the golden lasso-wielding heroine.

I have a girl crush...

on Amy Poehler (that is, I may be straight but she's so awesome). She and Jason Bateman -- star of Fox's "Arrested Development," the funniest show on TV and you should start watching it immediately -- have signed to play a married couple in THE HEARTBREAK KID. While on honeymoon, Bateman's character discovers his new wife, Poehler, is a psychopath. In real life, Poehler is married to Bateman's "Arrested Development" co-star Will Arnett and she also has a re-curring role on the show. Really, start watching it.

My Spidey Sense is Tingling

Thomas Haden Church, recent Best Supporting Actor nominee for his role in SIDEWAYS, is set to play the new villain in upcoming SPIDER-MAN 3. No word on the villain's identity or name, but this sounds very cool.

Thumbsucker; or, why I wore braces for 6 years

By special request: An adapation of Walter Kim's novel and directed by first-timer Mike Mills, THUMBSUCKER is about a nervous teenage boy (Lou Taylor Pucci) who asks an orthodontist (Keanu Reeves) and his high school debate coach (Vince Vaughn) for help kicking his habit. The rest of the cast includes Vincent D'Onofrio and Tilda Swinton as his indifferent parents, and Kelli Garner and Benjamin Bratt. Pucci won the Silver Bear award for Best Actor at the Berlin Film Festival, and THUMBSUCKER was also shown at Sundance this year. Sony Pictures Classics has picked up the film, and I'm contacting them to see if a release date has been set. If there are any movies you want to hear about, write to me at elizabeth@matchflick.com and I'll hunt up some news for you.

How much do you love Will Ferrell?

I just checked out the trailer for BEWITCHED, the upcoming adaptation of the classic television show of the same name. In a twist, the movie is about a washed up actor (Ferrell) who tries to reinvigorate his career by updating the TV show and recruits a woman (Kidman) to be his on-screen wife, not knowing she's really a witch. You can spot Jason Schwarztman, David Alen Grier, Michael Caine, and Stephen Colbert in the trailer, and Steve Carell and Shirley MacLaine are in it too. I saw Steve Carell talk about the movie on Conan last week, and he was so funny I cried a little bit. Just a little.

Let them watch BRING IT ON

Fans of LOST IN TRANSLATION and THE VIRGIN SUICIDES: if you're wondering what Sofia Coppola is up to, she's currently filming MARIE ANTOINETTE outside of Paris with Kirsten Dunst as the teenaged Austrian princess who becomes Queen of France at about the worst possible time. This press release details the cast and production further, including Jason Schwartman (Coppola's cousin -- his mom is Talia Shire, Connie from THE GODFATHER movies) as King Louis XVI. This is something I really can't wait to see.

Batter Up

According to Variety, Robert Redford is on to produce and star in a biopic about Jackie Robinson, the first African-American to play in modern-era Major League Baseball. Every team has retired his uniform number, 42, in recognition of that feat, which happened in 1947. Redford is playing Branch Rickey, General Manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers.

So wrong and so right

I swear I am not making this up: Courtney Love will play Linda Lovelace in a biopic about the uniquely talented star of DEEP THROAT. After appearing in the seminal porn film (look up seminal, I'm not just trying to be gross), Lovelace renounced the porn industry and said she'd been forced into it by her abusive husband. Current documentary release INSIDE DEEP THROAT further details her experience, but is more focused on the film and its effects than on what happened to Lovelace herself. If you want to feel dirty, go to a theater ticket window and say "One for INSIDE DEEP THROAT." For more details, see here.

Sneak a peak at Narnia

Just saw this featurette from WETA Digital (the same people who did the extraordinary effects for THE LORD OF THE RINGS) with a look at the visual aspects of THE LION, THE WITCH, AND THE WARDROBE. This is a movie I'm both excited and apprehensive about watching -- I loved the books, and hope the movies turn out well. In a nice parallel, C.S. Lewis, who wrote the Narnia Chronicles, was friends with J.R.R. Tolkein, who wrote LOTR, and both of their best-known works are being or have been adapted by the same creative minds.
