Movie Review by Zara

Cool!

How cool would it be to have a little kid named Cool? Probably not much since the kid would grow up to hate you for the name.

PARENTHOOD is one of those generational comedies about family, life, love and all that other nonsense. However, it never really delves into the sentimental crap that many other movies of this genre fall prey to. Sure, it has its moments, but for the most part it's a fairly honest portrayal of what it's like to grow up in a large family.

An unrelenting father who has 4 children, all different in their personalities. The eldest is played by Steve Martin in a subdued version of his characters that he made famous over the course of his career in the '80's. He's neurotic and yet self-assured, the cornerstone of his family. The youngest in the brood is an irresponsible brother played by Tom Hulce, a compulsive gambler who is forgiven for many of his misgivings by the father who is so hard on his other children.

If you came from a large family where everyone got together and it was one big, noisy get-together where you knew something was going to get broken and one of the kids was going to end up in tears by the end of the night, you'll understand this flick. Even if you weren't from a big family there are elements to it that you can enjoy.

It's heartfelt without being a bleeding heart kinda gig.
