Beyond description
I first watched this movie years ago at a friend's house while I was, for the lack of a more incriminating term, intoxicated. Quite simply, it freaked me the f*ck out. Every so often I'll see photoshopped images of the Muppets in X-rated positions, but this movie took the cake long before some kid with a computer could hack together Kermit slapping the bum of some other stuffed animal. There are characters in MEET THE FEEBLES that even Larry Flint couldn't have dreamed up.
The story follows a band of performers about to go live with a variety show which is quite clearly an attempt to parody The Muppets. The lead "actress" is an overweight hippo with an attitude problem, the lead "actor" is an adorable bunny and the rest of the cast is everything from a scummy rat to muckraking fly who buzzes around looking for his latest tabloid story. Things slowly begin to fall apart at the seams (if there ever were any holding this insane asylum together) and by the end there's a violated poodle, a fox singing the praises of sodomy and a bloody body count left in its wake.
How many muppet movies can make you gag in disgust? Long before Peter Jackson was perfecting CGI trees, he was piecing together felt and fluff to make the Feebles. I don't think that there has been a movie since this one with the capacity to scar me so intensely. Yet at the same time, the wildly catchy theme song ("Meet the Feebles.... They're not your average.... ordinary people...") will stick with you as much as the image of a rabbit popping his pus-filled lesion. I can't even say whether or not I consider this a "good" movie. I just know that there are some things that you must witness for yourself before you die. MEET THE FEEBLES is one of them.
