Tim Burton's 'Batman' was a huge box office success back in 1989, but after watching Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins, it is hard for me to enjoy this somber and dark visualization of Bruce Wayne's bitter crusade to avenge his parents by donning a costume and cleaning up the streets of Gotham City. Its production values are impressive (it won an Oscar for Art Direction/Set Decoration), and Burton's unique vision is always apparent in every scene, but it is often boring, as Wayne wallows in self-pity, emotionally isolated, opening up only to Vicki Vale (Kim Basinger), the woman he loves. I suppose one could define the movie by its villain, the Joker, played with relish by Jack Nicholson, who is amusingly over-the-top as a maniacal gangster who falls into a vat of chemicals that permanently distorts his face with a weird and creepy smile, and he throws on clown make-up and leads a posse of hooligans on a rampage, and only Batman can stop him.
Nicholson is honestly the only thing I really like. Michael Keaton is effective, his performance is fine, but the character of Bruce Wayne is not interesting at all, at least not here. The action sequences are entertaining enough, the various gadgets on display to make mincemeat of Joker's minions. Basinger is OK, but her damsel in distress is not quite as good as others.
