Lady and the Tramp, this isn't
Mostly forgotten, this is a fun cartoon movie that probably would get more credit if it wasn't as dark as it is. Based loosely on the tale of Oliver Twist, a book whose characters were originally human, this time the orphan is a kitten who winds up joining a pack of scavenging dogs.
I love that Billy Joel does the voice of Dodger and a couple of the lead songs as well. Perhaps it's not cool for me to admit, but I've always enjoyed Joel's voice and musical style and it's fitting here.
The other fun parts are the people with the recognizable voices, most notably Bette Midler as the spoiled prize poodle and Cheech Marin as the horny little chihuahua.
The music in this movie is good, the voice performances are solid and the movie surprisingly stays pretty true to the book's original outline, which is a rather depressing tale that might make smaller children upset. But it's a hell of a lot better than some of the other kid's movies being released lately.

"But I got street savoire faire" is a song lyric that still gets stuck in my head to this day!
Nice review choice. |

| I loved Joel's voice and musical style too...in this movie it was awesome! This is one of those kiddie flicks that I don't get tired of watching...I think with the humor of Cheech's horney little Chihuahua it can keep adults entertained as well. |
