The Last of Chevy's Dignity
I don't know why people decided to turn on Chevy Chase. He'd always been a little bit of a stand-offish prick in the past and he's never really done anything too different with his career to warrant people turning on him. Yet he's a comedic genius who gets less respect than Dangerfield, and personally I feel that's a shame.
This was the last of the movies that I can remember Chase doing where he did the standard Chevy thing, taking pratfalls with a straight face, losing it and going a little wild-eyed in some points. It's a movie that you have to give time, as the laughs don't really start pouring in until the movie's about halfway through.
But the laughs that are there are hardy. A fish out of water story, there really isn't anything new being done here. But I love Madolyn Smith Osborne as Chevy's suffering wife. I think having a straight woman to the funny straight man is exactly what kept this movie on track. Anyone else might have played her off as being a dumb bimbo, but she carries a sense of intelligence about her that is quite refreshing for this genre.
I think my favorite thing about watching this movie was watching it with my daughter, a 6 year old who had very earnest reactions to some of the situations with the animals. Yet through it all, she's decided that she is a fan of Chevy. And I say "bully!" for her decision.

George Roy Hill (RIP) also directed The World According to Garp. Which has nothing to do with anything.
If you're on a Chase kick, you should check out Spies Like Us. It has some FABULOUS cameos. |

| You are all sorts of right, I could not add anything. Still enjoyed it though. |

I didn't think of it as a kick so much as I was looking to perhaps feature MODERN PROBLEMS on The Bottom Shelf but turned out only wanting to do this one instead. (I'm thinking about pairing it with CRAZY PEOPLE, that's on the queue if you hadn't noticed.)
