The Bloodsucking Brady Bunch
Maybe it's because I was in the sixth grade when this movie was released, a young impressionable girl drawn to the fact that Patric looked so much like Jim Morrison with his long locks, but THE LOST BOYS remains one of my favorite movies from childhood. It has a cheesy plot, cheesy soundtrack, cheesy script, cheesy acting.... and yet I love it.
Probably one of my favorite parts about this movie turned out the be something that I didn't think would be my favorite. I thoroughly enjoyed Dianne Wiest as the boys' mother, wishing that she could have been my mom. Diminutive and yet willing to stand up to the crap that her kids are putting her through, I liked the vibe that she set off.
Jami Gertz, up until then best known to me as the girl who played Boots on The Facts of Life (a brief role, but memorable in my young and impressionable mind) was this tragic beauty in my eyes. I had never resented my blonde hair and blue eyes as much as I did when I saw the raven haired actress get the guy.
But it has always been Keifer who sold this movie for me. Sure, the Coreys were supposed to be one of the central focuses, as well as Patric and his love story with Gertz, but Keifer delighted so much in playing David, the lead punk in a group of punk vampires.
The way that he growls his lines and smirks at the camera has more of that Snickers satisfaction feel than when he played Ace in STAND BY ME. It's clear that he sees the role as being somewhat tongue in cheek and is having fun with it.
THE LOST BOYS might not be a classic by the standards of the critical elite, but it's always going to be a classic in my eyes.

| Did I inspire this review with my Corey Haim article? |

| This was my all time favorite movie from age 9-15, me and my friends could actually turn the sound off and recite the script word for word. I had the biggest crush on Corey Haime for year but I then graduated to Billy Wirth his eyes are lovely.....ah the things I could do with Billy Wirth, providing he hasn't turned into a fat bastard like Haime did. |
