Great music... now what?
I don't understand why this movie has the pull that it does over women. I mean, I guess I can understand it, the fact that we've been trained that we're supposed to go looking for the fairy tale guy, that frog who we just need to kiss in order to turn him into a prince. Why is that so pervasive? Hell, I've been a victim of it many a time. I'm still attracted to men that are a little f*cked up around the edges.
But in reality, they don't dance with you and make you all sunshine and roses, waltzing off into the moonlight. And therein lies the problem that I have with this movie. While it has great potential to be so much more than just a standard romance, it falls back on all of those old plot twists. The dancing in the bad boy's room. The mommy and daddy forbidding her from seeing him. The thrill of sneaking around.
I will say this for the movie. While it was able to create a niche for itself over the years as being highly romantic, it also has an element of realism to it. In the heart of the story, although glanced over a little too much for my tastes, you have the story of an abortion. Something that was practically unheard of at that time. It's handled appropriately in showing that there were grave dangers associated with illegal abortions back in the day. However, I am bothered that it seemed to have been used as a way to get these two lovers together and looms cheerily in the background. Hell, a guy in his mid twenties with a girl who's approximately 17-18 is bad enough. Romanticizing their sex (most likely without protection, as condoms or the pill were not typically the norm at that time) right after rescuing a girl from her certain death, just seems a little too wrong to overlook.
But hey... it gets women all happy in the pants. So, yeah. Good for Swayze and his love of the mullet.
