The face on the bar room floor
If youve never heard of Charles Bukowski i suggest you get reading my friend. He is an acquired taste and i know im in the minority when i say i think hes one of the greatest writers of our time. This movie is about some of the adventures he got up to before making it (of sorts) to becoming published as a writer. Mickey Rourke gives the performance of a lifetime as the booze hound writer and Barbet Schroeder (director) definately did his home work, just check out 'the Bukowski tapes' dvd to see what i mean. If you enjoy booze riddled tales of rejection, depression, failure and dispair (and lets face it who doesnt!) then this is for you. Faye Dunaway also is very impressive as his on/off girlfriend/drinking partner and some of the one off lines are genius as well as some scenes which defy explanation, such as when Henry is going into his apartment turning round to see two guys forcing a rooster through the door of their apartment. If you want to check out any of his books i suggest ham on rye to ease you in gently, he has a way of making ordinary situations seem extraordinary and telling tales where you dont know if hes making it up or it did actually happen to him. Which i suppose is the mark of a great writer but because of his past you wouldnt put anything past him.
