To look at Peter Jackson's no budget horror film to his more recent movies, like King Kong and the Lord of the Rings, it's an unbelievable change. It's not a bad change, but to see how he matured and how he changed when it came to large budgets and plenty of promotion shows a lot about how quickly and steeply a director can change when it deals with money. 'Bad Taste' is a very gory, very campy and very funny horror film shot on almost no budget. Peter Jackson used his own camera, made all the masks and paid for most of the film out of his own pocket, which shows us just how passionate the project was to him. There are a few pretty surprising things about the movie, first off, there was no script, everything was made up on the spot by the director and crew. This amazes me because the film seemed well put together with something without a pre-production. Second off, the movie was shot on Jackson's own 16mm camera, which didnt support sound. All the dialogue in the film was dubbed after initial shooting was finished.
At the same time though, it's easy to tell that the film was thrown together. Everything blended into each other well but there was alot of randomness when it came to the dialogue and even each action. The masks for the goofy aliens was made in Jackson's own kitchen, using materials he bought himself for the shoot. Another really big thing about the film is that there are no female characters, some of the aliens were acted by women, even though they were male aliens. When the film first begins, we think these creatures are zombies, because the first alien we see is slow moving and has the appearence of a zombie. Barry (Pete O'Herne) is seen being chased by one, he is indeed walking away from it since it moves at a slow pace. Eventually he ends up trapping it on the beach and we are introduced to our first major gore gag of the film, a head being blown into pieces.
For horror fans, 'Bad Taste' was looked heavily on for it's cheap, but really graphic gore gags. The aliens who's head was blown into pieces, brain matter oozes out of the wound and blood sprays everywhere, its a gore fans wet dream. Throughout the rest of the movie, we find out just how ridiculous most of the deaths really are. It's easy to see that most of them were thought up on the spot and created with a lot of creativity. There all backed up with plenty of gore, most of the time involving brain matter. There is one particular scene where an alien is seen using a spoon to eat a mans brain through his skull, it was this moment where my stomach began churning a little bit. Like really, thats sick, but it was really awesome to watch. I dont know if that makes me a freak or anything, but as a horror fan that's what I love to see and trust me, 'Bad Taste' delievers these nice, gory little scenes.
All of the dialogue and most of the actors actions were made up on the set on the day of the shooting, so most of the time the actors just kind of did whatever. Peter Jackson stars in here as Derek, who is a freak. I think his performance was worth mentioning because Derek becomes a psychopath and gets himself caught up in a lot of weird sh*t. Peter isnt a bad actor, or atleast at the time he wasnt. He was really nerdy and goofy, but hilarious at the same time. So 'Bad Taste' is an almost perfect horror comedy, it's one of the best I've seen and I give a lot of credit to Jackson on making the film. It's definitely a sick movie, its bloody and disgusting, but boy is it a classic.
