Adaptation perfection

Based on a short story by Stephen King, STAND BY ME is one of the best examples of a movie which takes previously written material and is able to make it its own without completely bastardizing the message of the original work.

Four preteen boys (although they look slightly older) go in search of finding one of their classmates who's recently disappeared. One of the boys has overheard some information that the boy was found by his brother and friend and that what they're going looking for is his dead body.

It's a morbid idea, 4 young kids going in search of a corpse and having a ball while doing it. An idea that is pure King. Put into the hands of lessor young actors or a less skilled director and you would have gotten a complete mess. Instead, the youthful nature of the boys' relationship is shown in the light that it should be. As we grow up, there are negative things going on around us every day. If we chose to focus solely on them, the entire world would be a depressing indie world with no reason for anyone to get out of bed let alone do anything else.

Sometimes you have to have a little fun in the face of tragedy. It's how you manage to work your way through it all. Including childhood.

Great review Why has River not gotton the same status as James Dean ? The only reason I can think of is in his last movie his looks were gone .( Running on empty he was so good )

I loved it, too. I am a huge King fan and I still think this was one of the best adaptations of any of his books.

I really love this movie...still to this day I watch it. Funny that I stumbled across this review looking at Kiefer Sutherlands movies. Just a few months ago I borrowed this flick from a friend, because I thought my sister should see it. I like to show her the older movies that she may not happen upon on her own, so she can see some really awesome movies that were made before all this technology with special effects and flashy stuff. She really enjoyed it. I was affraid she wouldn't get it and she'd be bored, but she really loved it...and it's funny, because she wants the soundtrack to it now too. :)
