Movie Review by Zara

When the quarterback isn't a bad guy

Lucas is a sentimental piece of fluff. Its purpose is solely to pull at your heartstrings and get you to cry. There is no illusion about what it's trying to do, you can sense it from the very beginning when you meet the scrawny little kid who falls in love with a girl who is unattainable for him.

The thing that I like best about this movie isn't that it follows so many cliches, it's that it breaks a great deal of them as well. Most importantly the quarterback, played here by a young and still attractive Charlie Sheen, is a nice guy who wants to help out Lucas. Rather than make fun of him and play into the jokes that are perpetrated against him, he appears to actually give a damn about what happens to him.

Also included in the film is Winona Ryder's debut performance as the geeky girl who actually likes the skinny kid but - as all cliches go - is overlooked by him as he chases after something that he's not going to get.

Lucas - skinny, geeky, kind and sweet.... but still a typical male. *sigh*
