Cheeseball greatness

How could you not love a flick with Louis Gossett Jr straightening out the rebellious white kid?

Although this film is dated, especially when it comes to the computer technology and its soundtrack, there is still something that gets me to watch it whenever a TV station is smart enough to play it. Gedrick is a teen whose Air Force pilot father's plane goes down behind enemy lines and is picked up by the local authorities who want to kill him. When the government does nothing about it, he devises a plan to steal a plane and go in and get him. Gossett helps him out along the way, training him to fly the mission and get his father.

There is heart behind this movie that shines through despite all of the cheesy lines and the implausibility of a kid being able to pull any of this off. (And the fact that Gedrick never really looks like a teenager. Man, I wish there had been guys like him at my school...) Perhaps it's just a feeling of remembrance and affection for the time that this movie was made, but I still say that I love it.

A quiet little classic, no matter the subject matter or cast involved.

Yes! This was one of a handful of movies that represent a slight obsession I had with the idea of becoming some kind of pilot or astronaut or something. Top Gun, Iron Eagle, Space Camp! And while all three of those movies have the grossly improbable in common (well, the latter two more than the former), all three appealed to my affinity for stories where young people take things into their own hands and act. And you are so right about Gedrick!

A Top Gun rip-off, with B-grade actors.

Your lack of movie knowledge doesn't surprise me, but here goes.

Both movies were released in 1986. You know what that means? That means that they were both being filmed at approximately the same time.

In order for something to be a rip-off, it needs to be taking original material from previously completed features. This was not the case. Many times storylines are discussed far in advance and depending on the level of action/stunts involved (as well as post production - you know, things like editing) one movie might take 18 months from start to finish where another might only take 12.

Just a little edu-ma-cation for ya.

Ok SISKEL, is that what the dictionary states a "rip off" is?

Top Gun was the box office hit........period. That nakes it the benchmark for others to try to acheive.

Top Gun had Tom Cruise (an A grade actor)....enough said.

How much money did Iron Eagle make? I'm guessing no where close to TOP GUN.

And where are the actors from it now?

I hear the crickets chirping...............

Maybe you should try leaving comments without trying to be-little people.......... I don't appreciate it, not did it prove anything.

You leave an uneducated response trying to belittle the actors (Um, as far as I checked, Louis Gossett Jr was an Oscar winner and Tom Cruise was just a nut job. Oh, and for the record... where is Anthony Edwards these days? Or Kelly McGillis? The only person in TOP GUN that anyone remembers is Cruise and that's not very fondly at the moment.) and you're going to get a taste of your own medicine.

Just because one was a bigger box office hit still doesn't make the other movie a rip-off. All a box office winner proves is that a large number of easily lead people spent money on a movie. It takes more than money to have an impact on the true value of a film.

Basically don't get into a pissing match with me if you can't hit the bowl.

I loved this movie too, definitely a classic. Like Charity, I had an obsession at the time with becoming a fighter pilot...even had the reccommendation letters needed to get into the Air Force Academy...until I learned how much math was involved. lol But the other two that she mentioned and this one were ones that I watched repeatedly. And I loved the soundtrack to this one too, if I remember correctly.
