Movie Review by Tony
April 7th, 2006

Ferris Bueller's Day Off is a film not so much about plot or story, as much as it is about being sweet, simple, and a lot of fun. Hearing the title of this film, you might think it's about Ferris and his day off, and while it is about that, it's more about Ferris trying to help his friend Cameron (Alan Ruck) gain some self respect, and deal with his father.

It stars cool, confident, and savvy Matthew Broderick as Ferris. The genius in Broderick's performance is this could have been easily been an arrogant, self centered, annoying, and sleazy character, since a lot of the tasks he is doing invoke some manipulation. But his heart is in the right place, he's likable, sweet, and caring of others. So a lot of the tasks he is performing throughout the duration of the film we can get into and buy, since he portrays Ferris as just wanting to help his friend, and the others standing in his way as comedic villains.

Such as the moronic, over the top, and bumbling fool dean of students played by Jeffrey Jones. He is on a mission to stop Ferris who always stays one step ahead of him during his plan to stay home from school. I never for one second thought that Jeffrey Jones had a chance to stop him as he was portrayed as such a clown, but again, this is a film not about plot.

A good portion of the film is Cameron, Ferris, and Ferris's girlfriend Sloane (Mia Sara) on a sight seeing tour of Chicago. So even at times when the film lacks, it makes up for it in sights and views. We see the Sears Tower, Wrigley Field, a parade, the Art Institute, a fancy restaurant, landmarks and just about everything Chicago has to offer.

Cameron is the opposite of Ferris. He is neurotic, worrisome, has no girlfriend, and lacks everything that Ferris has. So it's obvious while he's friends with Ferris, he can live through Ferris. Ferris has a sister who is uptight and hates how Ferris can get away with everything and she can get away with little to nothing. The parents love Ferris and sometimes show disdain for her.

Thanks to Ferris, everyone kind of comes of age in this film. This is a film about being free, and not being restricted or held back. Which is why I think it holds such mass appeal even to this day. Everything basically goes according to plan in this film, but it has good intentions, and wears it's heart on his sleeve. It's a fun little romp.
