The Best of the Lot

I went with my dad to go see this movie when it came out in the theaters. I'd been far too young to see the first installment when it was released and my dad had been forced to take my squeamish mother while I stayed at home with the babysitter. Needless to say, when I was in the sixth grade, my mom pawned me off to my dad so that he could go see the sequel and not have to go alone.

As we drove to the theater, my dad gave me the run-down on what happened in the first movie. I always loved spending personal one on one time with my dad and when I was 11, both of my sisters had been born and that time was less. So I remember just as much about his animated description of the original film as I do about seeing this one. Probably more.

We sat quietly in the theater as I practically jumped out of my seat when that little creature in the glass case slammed up against it and scared Paul Reiser. I didn't understand some of the issues that were popping up but it wasn't hard to follow.

The movie is fast paced, intense and almost blinding in its brutality. Weaver is unbelievable as Ripley, creating the strongest female character that I have seen onscreen until Juno in THE DESCENT.

There were parts of the movie that would have made more sense if I'd seen the first installment (something that I like about movies that are serials. I prefer that you need to be a fan to follow along. Otherwise, just make some original films) but I was lucky to have a dad who discussed the film with me afterward, helping to fill in the blanks that I didn't understand.

I later went back and watched the first movie to discover that I prefer this one better. I've also seen all of the subsequent films and that assertion remains the same.

(There, Tim. Are you happy? ;)

Hm, you know I saw Alien in the theater with my dad. I saw Aliens with a group of friends. But I wonder if a) which one you saw first dictates which one you like better or b)if there's some rosy hue because you see one with a parental unit. Or just cuz I was younger.

You know. I have three tabs open right now with all the comments and was starting to reply to your comment on my comment on Jenny's review, explaining basically what I did here.

Yeah, I might be more partial to the second movie because I got to experience it with my dad, who was a huge fan of the art of the first flick. (But my poor mother was just grossed out by it.)

So I guess I can go close that other tab now.
