Movie Review by Veronica

It's lucky to have gotten that

Oh my goodness...quite possibly the worst movie in the world. I'm not one to ever dislike movies. I can appreciate something in almost all of them and even movies that are mostly boring to me are fine. I'm also an audacious person and it's nearly impossible to offend me...but of course....this movie offended me. Truly. And it didn't offend me because of the nature of this film..."dark" or what have you (which I do think it's not a cheery sunny movie, but it's not Charlie and the Chocolate Factory dark), but rather I was offended for Disney...that they would put out this garbage and call it a movie, I was offended for the original movie, that they would mar it by associating it with this nonsense; and lastly I was offended for anyone who thinks fondly of oz...and they way they dessimated the hopes and dreams of literary and movie lovers everywhere.

The "special effects" if you can even call them that were ridiculous and awful. A toddlers cartoon has more convincing graphics than those stupid rocks talking to themselves. The most upsetting part to me was the physical appearance of the characters. They didn't even loosely resemble the characters from the originial film. Dorothy had grown about 6 years younger while 6 months elapsed. The scarecrow looked like a beanbag and the lion looked like he belonged at the zoo, not the whimsical land of Oz. I did like the princess with the interchanging heads...I could see the potential for fear in children but I still thought it was whimsical and fun. The whirly-madoos were annoying, but fun to watch. Overall the movie was just stupid. So stupid it upset me, not just a passive kind of stupid. So stupid I'm going to stop venting about it because thinking of all the wasted emotion this is causing me is upsetting me even more.

p.s. I'd still recommend it though, I want everyone to be just as upset as I am.

So I take it that you thought the set / prop designers from 1939 were totally advanced for their time?

Heh. "whirly-madoos" I kind of liked it. The part with the headless queen was good you admitted to that. and the part with the Gnome king. The rocks were ok just crappy pixellated and atari looking. It was ok for its time but it doesnt even hold a candle to the original. Lots of lame movies came out of the 80s... Mannequin anyone?

I haven't seen this one, but I have heard quite a bit about it. I even hear that Dorothy gets electro shock therapy in one scene. Not the kind of thing for kids to see.
