Murdock... I'm coming to get you!
Favorite Movie Quote: "Mission... accomplished. You know there's more men out there and you know where they are. Find'em. Or I'll find you."
When someone is talking about a film and refer to it as an "action" movie, this film is what would pop into my mind. Rambo First Blood part 2 is one of the few sequels ever made that surpass the original. It is also special to me because this film is one of my favorite movies of all time.
I had this film on VHS when I was about 9 or 10. I watched it everyday when I came home from school probably for a year or longer straight. For a boy Rambo is a hero almost better then any Spiderman or Superman. Rambo is a real person without superpowers or fancy gadgets.....just a skill to kick ass and take names.
It has been a few years since we last saw Rambo at his breaking point. He now is serving time in prison and unexpectedly gets a visit from his long time friend Col. Samuel Trautman (Richard Crenna,) Crenna has a proposition for Rambo....do another mission and get out of prison for good.
After Rambo accepts he is then taken to meet Marshall Murdock played by Jack Napier. Murdock informs Rambo of his mission objective to back to Vietnam and PHOTOGRAPH only any American POW's that Rambo can find. Rambo has a problem with this...he as a soldier cant fathom leaving an American behind. Rambo agrees to Murdock's demand.
Rambo gets to Vietnam and meets his inside guide which is a beautiful woman named Co Bao (Julia Nickson-Soul) she shows him were the camps are and before long Rambo finds American prisoners of war. He grabs one that is not being held by the rest and makes his way to the extraction point. As the helicopter comes to pick them up they are ordered by Murdock to turn around and come back to base, to abandon Rambo and the American because Rambo didn't follow orders and take pictures only. Rambo is not a POW himself.
The rest of the film follows the adventure of Rambo escaping and basically taking on a brigade of Russian and Vietnamese soldiers by himself. He falls in love with Co and try's to rescue every POW that is there while on his way to seek revenge on Murdock.
This film exceeds most action films. The character of Rambo is not like most war veterans that you meet through film. You care about this man and want him to find solidarity and peace. You also respect him for being the killing machine that he is. Rambo always has some cool weapons to his famous huge bowie knife to explosive tipped arrows and cool machine guns. In the film his physical appearance is trademarked by two things, a pendant that he receives from Co and a red piece of cloth tied around his head that came from Co's dress.
Rambo executes each solider he runs into without remorse. They have taken the love of his life and caused many years of pain to his comrades. He goes after them viscously and without pity.
The director George P. Cosmatos who is now departed, was just brilliant with all of his shots. Even though the film was set in Vietnam it was actually filmed in Acapulco and Guerrero, Mexico. You will never second guess where Rambo is at because the filming locations are wisely chosen and look just as is an average person would think Vietnam looks. The music was wonderfully scored by the great Jerry Goldsmith and it is absolutely perfect.
The cast was chosen nicely. Dolph Lundgren was originally cast in it until Stallone realized that he was going to be the villain in Rocky IV so then he was un cast. Of course Stallone and Crenna where back as Troutman and Rambo but also added where some other very familiar faces. You have Steven Berkoff playing a villain named Lt. Col. Podovsky. Berkoff even at the time was a veteran starring in pictures such as Beverly Hills Cop, A Clockwork Orange and Octopussy. He played Podovsky with such certainty, even his accent as a Russian soldier is perfect. Julia Nickson-Soul made her first on screen appearance in this film and you would never know it. Later she went on to star in Sidekicks with Chuck Norris and also starring on the TV series Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Last but not least we have Martin Kove who we all know as John Kreese from The Karate Kid.
Its my childhood favorite film, I have played Rambo probably more times then I have played hide and seek or tic tac toe.
