Since the last time we saw John Rambo he was being taken away after destroying a small town. He is now in prison and Trautman gets him free under one condition. Rambo's new mission is to go back to Vietnam and gather intelligence of any remaining POWS that may still be there. Rambo is only supposed to take pictures but he plans to rescue them. This embarks a journey to escape from 1000's of Vietnamese and Russian soldiers that are hunting Rambo. Rambo will deal with them and then hunt the man that stabbed him in the back.
Rambo First Blood Part II, directed by George Cosmatos, is a lot weaker then its predecessor. The first Rambo movie took a more serious approach when it came to the seriousness of both the character and realizticness of the movie. It seems as if First Blood Part II, becomes more campy then the original and tends to lean more towards unrealistic scenes and more action then it does story. As the character of John Rambo is still the same Rambo we saw in the first one but the action and story seem more towards blowing a lot of stuff up and shooting a lot of bad guys.
The one thing I really appreciaed when it came to the first movie was that it kind of paid a tribute to the soldiers of the Vietnam War. As we saw Rambo, a mentally and emotionally hurt character scarred by the effects of the war. So the first one had a more serious tone when it came to that very touchy subject. Sylvester Stallone had a bigger hand with First Blood Part II as he wrote the script along with James Cameron. He did keep the kind of quiet and hurt character as the first one, but it was the narrative of the movie and the action which threw me out. Sylvester Stallone is Rambo and nobody can take his spot. He takes the character of Rambo and makes him emotionless.
The first movie kind of was more of a chase movie then it was just an action movie. There were some scenes of action but they played out towards the end when we finally got a feel for most of our characters. With Rambo II, basically the story revolved around action and the whole movie just became one giant action scene after another. There is a lot of action and the body count is nice and high for Rambo II.
So like I said, the major problem I had with Rambo II is that its more of an action movie then it was the character story from the first one. It is a cool film and its full of action but lacks everything that made the first one good.
