The Goonies in outer space?

This movie was released around the same time as The Goonies and the story does revolve around a group of young kids that go exploring. You have Wolfgang the inventor [River Phoenix], Ben the romantic dreamer [Ethan Hawke], Darren the fast talking bad boy [Jason Presson], and then you have the token love interest Lori [Amanda Peterson]. They both have references to the movie Gremlins. But, that's about where the similarities end. There is no house in danger of being mortgaged and no Fratelli's to contend with. Instead, Ben is contacted in his dreams by an alien race. With this information and Wolfgangs intelligence they are able to devise a way to travel to outer space. Darren goes along with them just to be away from his dad.

This amount of other movies brought up or alluded to in this is incredible. For starters you get to hear the Wilhelm scream in one scene. In a fictional movie at the drive in the characters name is Starkiller, which was originally supposed to be Luke Skywalkers last name until George Lucas decided to change it. In the junkyard where they get the parts for there makeshift space ship you can see a sled with Rosebud written on it. It is the actual sled from Citizen Kane. The aliens they meet just repeat popular phrases from old movies or cartoons.

Bottom Line: Sci-fi adventure that's fun for the whole family
