The Color Purple (1985)

I am not a Spielberg person, I find his films to be audience-attracting, lame-ending fare that don't really appeal to those who know life is not always gum drops and happy endings.
That said, this is probably his best film. Based on Alice Walker's great book, it tells the story of Southern black women trying to stand up for themselves in a patriarchal and racist society.
Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey give their greatest performances in this moving and emotional epic.
One for the ages.
