Movie Review by Mitch
August 22nd, 2006

I love this movie. I grew up watching it and if you are between 30 and 40 and you haven't seen this film, where have you been?! I'll bet most of you have so I won't go into a real deep review. It's a classic. If you haven't seen it, go get it now, I'll wait.

If you have seen it, I'll bet that everyone can relate to at least one of the characters if not more. The emotions and social situations feel real, albeit exaggerated. I know I can relate to a lot of the feelings that were discussed. Although in reality, I don't think anyone would discuss these things with kids you just met that morning, like the confession scene as to why they all had detention. I could see telling what they did, but not why or how it made them feel. Most kids that age generally feel alone, like no one understands them.

I know that there are probably real deep meanings and social commentaries and in depth dynamics that could be read into this flick but I just tell 'em how I see 'em, one of the funnier coming of age (?) movies out of the 80's. I just think it's a funny movie. That's all. I will say this; I think all of the characters get a wake up call as to what life really is like. Carl telling Vernon that it's him changing, not the kids. Claire and Brian telling how things will be between them all on Monday morning. There are some truths to this film.

You can see how peer pressure works in the scene where they get up one by one to go smoke pot with Andrew. BTW, could you imagine smoking pot in your school library? I know I can't. I think Allison didn't go with them because she was already stoned, there is no other explanation for a Pixie Stick and Cap'n Crunch on white sandwich is there? lol

My big complaint is the end. In real life there is no way that Bender and Claire would end up together, or Andrew and Allison for that matter. But I guess that this was John Hughes way of saying that the world can change.
