Movie Review by Jarrod
July 16th, 2007

'The Terminator' features Arnold Schwarzenegger in his most iconic role, as the emotionless killer from the future, transported to the past to murder Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton), whose yet unborn son John will lead the human resistance in a world dominated by machines. It is really quite perfect for Schwarzenegger, and his thick Austrian accent, to speak robotically, and whose impressively massive physique makes him look like something scary and indestructible. The superb craftsmanship of director James Cameron makes this an action/sci-fi classic, fast-paced, loud, and violent, with an intriguing plot filled with improbable paradoxes, which are simply ignored, leaving us to think about them, when we should just be enjoying the spectacle before us. Michael Biehn is the lowly mortal sent to protect Sarah, a seemingly impossible task given his opponent, but he proves remarkably resourceful and resilient, though he is flesh and bone rather than solid metal.

Hamilton makes for a terrific heroine, an unlikely action star, someone we care about, though she would kick more ass in the sequel than she does here. As for those paradoxes, I cannot discuss them without spoiling the narrative, so I will forego that, but they are abundant in any movie about time travel, and any serious meditations on such a topic would lead to needlessly complicated rhetoric best left to Stephen Hawking. Cameron engages us with stunning special effects and pyrotechnics, and that is enough to make for compelling and consistent entertainment, which is all one can and should expect from a movie like this.
