Movie Review by Zara
March 13th, 2007

Probably not as funny as you remember it

I used to eat so much with my hands when I was a little kid that my parents would joke that my prom night dinner would look much like Daryl Hannah as she chomps into the lobster in this movie.

There is a lot of bittersweet comedy to this movie, a tale about a man who falls overboard on a ship and is rescued by a mermaid. The same thing happened to him when he was a little boy, so when a mysterious woman appears in his life looking for him, he starts to connect the dots and figure out what's going on.

There are scenes which are funny, usually including the late and great John Candy and the uber cool Eugene Levy, but most of the time this is a soft romance. Daryl Hannah is young and nubile, something that all actresses look great at doing in their younger years without having to really act. Hanks mainly looks a little confused and for the most part plays his role on mute.

This is one of those '80's movies that you THINK is as good as you remember it until you watch it again as an adult and realize that it's not as up to par as your memory serves.

I felt the exact same way. Loved it when I was a kid, showed it to my daughter, because she loves mermaids, and realize that it actually kind of sucked.
