Movie Review by Zara

Sweep the Leg!

I was a kid when this came out and the idea of seeing a karate movie interested me. After some begging, my mom took me to see it. The thing was that it wasn't supposed to be popular. Macchio wasn't considered to be a big name and there were no other big name actors. The studios had all but written it off, releasing it in a small number of theaters. So, much to my mom's surprise when we got to ours, the lines outside were not expected.

The movie has since grown on the gain its own set of legs, a classic before kids are old enough to go to school. I don't need to run down the plot, everyone already knows what it's about.

The movie is charming, Macchio is nerdy enough and yet still kinda cute for a skinny Italian kid. Pat Morita created one of the most memorable movie characters ever and it's Elizabeth Shue's first movie to boot.

I still feel the tension when I see him raise his arms and leg, trembling to stay upright. I've watched this movie more times than I can count and 23 years later the ending STILL gets me. Closing with Morita's smiling face of approval is the capper.

"We did it, Mr Miyagi! We did it!"

Yes, you did.
