Gremlins (1984)

This was not supposed to be a family film
A cute little stuffed animal with big eyes is the perfect marketing tool. Make a bunch of them and they'll sell faster than that odd looking alien with the glowing heart. Just make sure you tell the family movie going audience that this is really a light weight horror flick. I mean... they should expect it, but still.
The public made this movie a very popular one back in 1984, back when people were looking for the next big ET. The theaters were packed with people of all ages in a time when the PG-13 rating hadn't yet been developed. This is one of the movies that propelled the MPAA to come up with it.
Strange little creatures trying to tear a woman apart end up thrown into her microwave and cooked until they pop. Memories shared of how someone's dad broke his neck while attempting to deliver Xmas presents down the chimney. The snow on the streets melting with the heat of blood spilled.
I like that this is a dark and twisted part of my childhood. Edgier than ET and more intense than The Goonies, Gremlins remains one of my favorite movies to watch repeatedly, although I tend to stick to watching it on or around Halloween. The things that scared me about it then don't seem to phase my young daughter now. CGI and all that great stuff have killed some of the imagination.
But she still wanted a Gizmo. Man, that little puppet was brilliant.
