How the Canadians do Hamlet
Favorite Movie Quote: "Bob McKenzie: This movie was shot in 3B - three beers - and it looks good, eh?"
Apparently watching "Strange Brew" at least once is mandatory if you want to become a Canadian Citizen (same goes for "Slap shot"), and as I'm gearing up to take my citizenship test I figured it was a good place to start.
Believe it or not this flick is VERY, VERY loosely based on Hamlet or so I read, although I didn't see the similarities and I don't really wanna watch it again, once is quite enough.
I've never watched SCTV and from what I understand it was kinda like a Canadian SNL, which spawned such greats like Eugene Levy and John Candy, and of course Rick Moranis and the slightly lesser know Dave Thomas.
So Bob and Doug (Moranis and Thomas) are supposed to be stereotypical beer swilling Canadians, they say "Eh" a lot and call each other "hossers" (I got no f*ckin' clue what one of them is, but I hope it's not on the citizenship test)... Anyhoo in an attempt to get free beer they stuff a mouse into a beer bottle and complain to the Elsinore Brewery, who give them jobs checking the beer for mice. It's all kinda f*cked up but within this dodgy dialogue we find out that the Brewmaster is trying to drug the population, the owner was killed by his brother, who then marries his wife (I guess that was the Hamlet connection) and the daughter of the dead owner, along with our drunken Canuks go on to save the world and drink free beer.....the end.
Now I reckon if I had watched this back in the 80's I might have found it funny and gone on to revere it as a classic, but alas I didn't, and I don't.
