Hi everybody. My name is J.R. and I am a John Hughes addict. My addiction started when I was about fourteen and was given a copy of Sixteen Candles, and fell immediately in love with Molly Ringwald...yes, my addiction was caused by a girl. I followed this girl to Pretty in Pink and the Breakfast Club, and was eventually told by a schoolchum that the writer of MY favourite flick was the writer of HIS favourite flick.
A film called National Lampoon's Vacation.
A film which confirmed my addiction, an addiction that lasted until Curly Sue burnt a fist sized hole in my 'enjoyment bubble'.
National Lampoon's Vacation tells the tale of Clark 'Sparky' Griswold (Chevy Chase), who has decided to take his family, including wife, Ellen (Beverly D'Angelo) and two kids Rusty (Anthony Michael Hall) and Audrey (Dana Barron) on a cross-country roadtrip to the greatest fun park in America...WallyWorld. Sufficed to say Clark gets into and out of many brushes with the law and various shenanigans as he drags his family arouind on a trip they would have rathered made by plane...
This film has special appearance by so many comedy film favs it is almost hard to count all of them: Eugene Levy, John Candy, Randy Quaid, Brian Doyle-Murray, not to mention an appearance by a VERY young Jane Krakowski!!
Yesterday, almost 20 years after I first saw this flick, I decided to sit down and watch it again, and I have to say that even though it is a film that is almost 25 years old, it is still pretty funny, and any fan of Homer Simpson's stupidity and ridiculous schemes should watch this, as I reckon Matt Groening based alot of our yellow dunderheads character on Chase's wonderful portrayl of a man who can allure a sexy girl, even though he has spat out salami sandwiches covered in dog piss in front of her. Brilliant!!
