Movie Review by Richard

Is that Drew Carey?

A Christmas Story is a true classic, in the sense that I have never met a person that has seen this movie, and not found something to laugh about.

It tells the story of a somewhat nerdy young boy in Ohio, and his quest to convince everyone that he should have some special BB gun for Christmas. The Red Rider, I think it's called. Everyone thinks he'll shoot his eye out.

The compelling thing about this movie is that it is unbelievably normal. Everyone in the movie is like people you meet in real life. There are no characters that are out of the ordinary, and it's like you sometimes see your own childhood in this movie. The anticipation of receiving the presents, the naive perspective that this boy has, and his reaction to discovering all of these things he experiences leading up to the wonderful ending.

Anyway, if you haven't, watch it. Don't expect to be wowed, or to cry, just expect to feel good and smile. That's all. It's a good story.

I have much affection for Bob Clark. My favorite thing about this movie is that it is so not saccharine. It's such a great alternative to the regular, cloying, sticky-sweet, Christmas fare.

I have the "sequel" to this in my queue right now, amongst other Bob Clark flicks. He'll be getting his week on my other column, I'm just not sure which two I'll be going with.
