Sophie's Choice (1982)

Sometimes melodramatic, but good.
One of Meryl Streep's most transformative and amazing performances is without a doubt the highlight of this movie.
She plays a Polish woman who is trying to ignore the horrors she lived through during the Nazi occupation, while carrying on an interesting relationship with an eccentric man, Kevin Kline.
The couple is observed by another man (Peter MacNichol) who is fascinated by Sophie.
The story is often melodramatic, but Streep keeps you watching.
The idea of 'sophie's choice' has become such a larger cultural reference this film is certainly worth viewing for that reason, but it is also a heart-breaking story of impossible decisions and a different perspective on WWII.
