Faithful Adaptation

How many people remembered that Coppola directed this flick, raise your hands. And no, I don't mean the more hip Sofia but rather her father, Francis. Yeah, I didn't think so.

Another shining example of the Coppola's talent for picking precisely the right cast for whatever project they are working on, this movie isn't remembered for the director but for the number of guys that went on to be bigger movie stars and regular faces on the covers of teeny bopper magazines in the 1980's.

I've read the book, a melodramatic piece of fluff written for teenagers and feeding off the old principals better related in the play and film WEST SIDE STORY. There is less of a romance here and more of guys rumbling and then inadvertently killing one another, running from the law and having it catch back up to them.

I will give credit to the movie for staying true to the book, even if I can't say that I embrace the material with open arms. The acting is all solid and showcases the fact that these men were going to go on to be influential in the movie industry. They might have called them the Brat Pack, but in the end they were the ones laughing to the bank.
