Movie Review by AJ
February 6th, 2007

This is certainly one of my all-time favorite movies, and I have memories of seeing this film in the theater that are not far behind those of the first Star Wars film. The Dark Crystal tells the tale of Jen the Gelfling, the last of his kind, and the arduous journey that he faces as he seeks to find his destiny. Pretty nifty, right? Well, it is, plus it's nothing but 100% Henson-designed creatures (think Muppets).

There is little that DOESN'T work in this film. The story is the basic good versus evil, but also touches on the internal good versus evil in all of us, in a most creative way. Add to that the rich detail of the Dark Crystal world, and the unique characters that populate that world, and you've got the formula for one entertaining movie. Yes, there were parts that made me a bit jumpy as a kid (one tends to forget that these are muppets, after all), and the soundtrack only added to the movie-going experience. I can still sit down and watch this film straight through without losing any interest. That says alot...

I'd recommend this for most anyone, at least once. Yes, there is a sequel in the works, tentatively scheduled for a 2008 release, and I'm sure that the special effects will be a bit better with today's technology than they were 20+ years ago. Still, The Dark Crystal is a fun-filled fantasy feature (say that five times fast) that is absolutely worthwhile for all ages.

FIVE STARS!

This movie creeped me the hell out when I was little, with that whining creature that got ousted. It's been a few years since I've sat down and watched the whole thing from beginning to end. It still gives me the shivers just thinking about it.
