Movie Review by Zombie Boy
December 20th, 2007

Creepshow is a fine, fine anthology film.

Sure, not every single vignettes holds up as well as the other, but overall it is quite an effective piece.

George Romero and Stephen King got to talking, and decided to try to bring back a piece of their childhood: the look and feel of EC Comics.

The end result is a comic-book film, but not like Superman or Batman.

There are five tales, bookended by a piece featuring an uncredited Tom Atkins (plus a future acclaimed new writer).

The first one, Father's Day, is sort of a throwaway, though it does feature a very uncomfortable looking Ed Harris. A family gathers for Father's Day, except one of the family members killed the father in question several years before. And that corpse wants his cake! The piece doesn't do much, but it does set up the tone for the film, what with all the kooky reaction shots and colored gels on the lights.

Something to Tide You Over ramps up the tension a little, but is still kind of a dud. Ted Danson and Leslie Nielsen go head to head, over a woman. There is intrigue, bravado, and sand in everyone's shorts. Not to mention waterlogged zombies!

The third bit, The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill, is not only one of the better pieces, a one man act (basically) about a poor bumpkin who has a meteorite land on his property, with disastrous consequences to his personal person, also stars Stephen King himself! Normally only seen in cameos, it is really funny to watch him mugging and vamping for the entire short, and getting green with more than just the money from his books.

Now The Crate, starring Hal Holbrook and Adrienne Barbeau, is the standout piece, in my opinion. The crate contains a creature, just as poor Henry's marriage contains a creature. They're both out for blood. So Henry arranges a meeting. Just tell him to call you Billie! This short captures the spirit of EC Comics better than any of the others, in my opinion, and is worth the entire film.

Finally, we have EG Marshall doing a one-man performance in They're Creeping Up on You. It plays as a take-off of A Christmas Carol, except instead of learning the true meaning of Christmas, Upson Pratt gets infested with huge c*ckroaches. Not one for the squeamish.

In addition to Tom Atkins and Joe Hill (King's son), there are also cameos from Tom Savini and Gaylen Ross.

The sequels are iffy, but this one is a gem.
