Movie Review by Zara

I liked weird sh*t even when I was little

I LOVED this movie when I was a little kid. A movie where the protagonists are a group of little people (dwarfs or midgets if you so prefer... but I hear that's not the politically correct usage anymore) and a kid gets to help hop around the world, traveling through time? Fanciful images and situations that only my imagination could conjure up? That was for me.

Watching it again with my little girl made me thankful that Gilliam made the movie. Although it was originally released 26 years ago, the film holds up wonderfully, something that very few of the computer animated movies are going to be able to do when technology has progressed beyond our current imaginations. Even with its antiquated special effects, it has a strong appeal.

One of the things of interest that I noted was how much of this movie seems to have had a direct influence on BILL AND TED'S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE. The goofy representation of Napoleon is the biggest one (my sisters and I couldn't resist singing "Ziggy piggy, ziggy piggy!" when we saw Ian Holm on screen as the little ruler) and my daughter seemed to love pointing out Jim Broadbent as the game show host, saying that he was "Danny's daddy!" as a reference to Broadbent's role in HOT FUZZ.

But essentially this is a movie about the little man overcoming the shackles of oppression that religion and consumerism have put on him (us). It's about learning to stand up, do a little magic and then escape out the back door. There are thousands of them out there in the world, we need only look for them.
