This charbroiled adventure was made with all the childhood spunk Spielberg had left in his bones by his early thirties, but also with the craftsmanship of a seasoned professional. It's the first, and best, of the movies in the "Indiana Jones trilogy," but it's a little sad that it isn't otherwise viewed by many as a great standalone suspense thriller. Dr. Henry "Indiana" Jones (Harrison Ford) may be the central character, but Spielberg and team don't put much forth in establishing him as an icon. They are less concerned with who he is than with what he does -- globetrotting in search of buried treasure. In this movie he races against the Nazis to find the sacred "Ark of the Covenant." The movie is privy to historical fact but sensationalizes its premise near to the point of camp. To be sure, some aspects are rigid and austere, but Spielberg has few qualms about pressing on the natural constraints of the story, as in the end when the Ark emanates a violent power from God upon the Nazis. That's part of the movie's joy -- its got real daring.
