HORRORSHOW OF ALL HORRORSHOWS
Like, would the reel/real JOAN CRAWFORD kindly put that goddamn wire coat-hanger down and give her frickin' kid a hug!? Sheesh!
So, it would seem that CHRISTINA CRAWFORD, the adopted, and allegedly abused daughter of real-life, mega-star, JOAN CRAWFORD, finally got her well-deserved revenge here. Yeah. CHRISTINA really slammed her 'Mommie, Dearest', but good.
First of all came CHRISTINA's scandalous 'tell-all' autobiography, which, in turn, lead to the making of this very-very-very-very eye-opening flick.
MOMMIE DEAREST is, without question, a truly chilling and grotesque look behind the finely-manicured facade of JOAN CRAWFORD, one of Hollywood's biggest and brightest stars of the 40's and 50's.
And, I'm asking you - Who could ever really blame CHRISTINA for all of her spite and retaliation against JOAN? 'Cause, believe me, it wasn't just the physical and verbal abuse that JOAN dished out in aces to CHRISTINA as a child, that justifies her revenge - No - On top of that unwarranted cruelty, JOAN, in the end, (being the total b-i-t-c-h that she was) actually had the frickin' gall to completely disinherit CHRISTINA right out of her Will - A Will that must've been well worth millions, upon millions.
Like, can you believe it!?
And to make this Hollywood Horrorshow absolutely complete -
FAYE DUNAWAY plays CRAWFORD with such unblinking ferociousness and conviction that, at times, she comes pretty damn close to turning her portrayal of the woman into a literal parody-from-hell. DUNAWAY's over-the-top performance has got to be seen to be believed. At every possible opportunity she chews the scenery right up into total shreds as if she were some kind of a frickin' Shreddie-Monster, or something.
And as an added bonus -
If DUNAWAY's positively petrifying performance doesn't scare the living hell out of you - Wait'll you get a load of her 'Joan-Crawford-Look' make-up job. Wow! With lip-glossed 'bow-tie' mouth and penciled eyebrows for days, you'd think that Halloween had arrived early at CRAWFORD's place this year.
Yep. MOMMIE DEAREST is, indeed, a genuine Hollywood oddity. There's no doubt about that.
