Yay for Neil Simon!
I do so love a good Neil Simon movie. While I'm disappointed that they've decided to remake THE HEARTBREAK KID with Ben Stiller (how abysmal does that piece of dog poo look?), I must that I haven't seen the original yet. Still, I already know that it's got to be better than the new one. Because I'm judgmental like that.
What I like best about Simon is that he can find the best humour in situations that normally wouldn't be considered funny. Granted, the slapstickishness of what goes on in this movie is silly comedy at its best, the fact that it stems from two people who are divorced is a Simon ploy. These are not ex lovers who happen to have their paths cross again. And they manage to get along, flirt with getting back together and still not take the road too frequently traveled in film.
My favorite part about this movie is that it was when Chase and Hawn were at the top of their respective games. Chase was still rakishly handsome and Hawn was churning out comedy that was a little more grown-up, spurred on by her nasty divorce with former husband (and daddy to her eldest kids) Bill Hudson. This was made the same year that PRIVATE BENJAMIN was, if that's any indication for you.
I also love Charles Grodin, one of the smartest men who happens to play character parts where he's taken for the fool, as well as Robert Guillaume, who exudes grace and integrity in every work that he touches.
