smoke on the water....

a quiet little fishing town where nothing happens... until the day of the towns 100 year anniversary... when everything seems to go crazy...

This ghost story stars the likes of scream queens Jamie Lee Curtis and Janet Leigh (although neither one gave a trademark horror movie scream). Jamie is a cute artist hitchhiker trying to make her way to Vancouver and Janet is a no nonsense politician trying to organize the town's anniversary activities. Their fates unexpectedly collide when a vengeful fog descends on the sleepy town... with the purpose of collecting six lives and lost treasure...

Unlike most scary movies of today, this film actually is filled with SUSPENSE. its palpable. so when something unexpected happens, you really are scared because you are anticipating it...

The biggest problem with this film really isn't its fault... afterall it is almost thirty years old... so the fancy visual special effects aren't there. The fog doesn't much look like fog in any of the close up scenes... it looks like smoke... and the ghosts' movements are so stiff and zombie like you can tell its just someone waving a fake arm through a partially closed door...

but the lack of special effects helps to create the suspense. you never get a good look at the visitors who appear in the fog, knocking on your door equipped with industrial sized fish hooks....

Overall, this film will make you jump and give you chills, provided that you are willing to suspend your disbelief and just sit back and enjoy the ride...

I disagree about the special effects. I'm not anti-CGI, per se, but I would rather see a practical effect whenever possible.

JC has always been hit or miss for me, but this one is a hit. Truth be told, it's a rather thin film, but the all-star (for geeks) cast more than makes up for it. I haven't seen the remake, and probably never will.

I with you on this one Zombie, I actually prefered the effects in the original more than the remake (call me old fashioned I guess).

P.S. don't watch the remake Zombie, its arse.
