Eaten Alive (1980)

For the cannibal connoisseur
Favorite Movie Quote: "Cannibals. Instead of buying frozen meat in the supermarket, they get theirs fresh from people like you. One way to solve the problem of starvation in the world."
While this film by Umberto Lenzi was not declared a "video nastie," his last film for the cannibal connoisseur, Cannibal Ferox, was. There is another film called Eaten Alive (or Death Trap), directed by Tobe Hooper, and featuring Robert Englund, that is also a video nasty. This belongs in the same genre; it just may have snuck by the censors.
One thing that I found noteworthy was the quality of the film. The Sri Lanka countryside is beautiful, and the cinematography, both inside and out, is extremely good. The dubbing quality, although I prefer subtitles, is also very good.
Shiela (Janet Agren) heads into the jungle to find her sister Diana (Paola Senatore), who has joined a Jim Jones type cult. They practice drinking the kool aid for the big day to come.
Like any good cult leader he has women running around topless, and has strange rituals that call for the widow of a man to lie in his ashes and taken his three brothers in view of the whole camp. Of course, he manages to get his share, too.
All around them are cannibals, and it is in this situation that Mark (Robert Kerman) must help the women to escape.
Mascetomies, castration, lots of bushes (it is the jungle, after all), and a Jim Jones type ending with the predicable deux ex machina arriving at a critical moment.

| Oh yeah! Mondo-canibale film. Not the best of it's kind but entertaining vehicle nevertheless. |
