Being There (1980)

Classic Sellars
I had no idea what this film was about when I rented it. All I knew was, I loves me some Peter Sellers (for god's sake, I sat through 'What's New, pu**ycat?' for the man). Tom Hanks owes his 'Forrest Gump' Oscar to Sellers' work here as Chance, a gardener for a rich man in Washington D.C. However, Chance is simple-minded and, for some reason, has never been outside of the estate he tends and only knows the outside world through what he sees on television. Chance's adventures with the upper classes are remarkable for the subtle, under-stated work done by Sellers, as well as the magnetism of Shirley Maclaine as an upper class wife who befriends him. Filmmakers today could learn a lot from the work of Hal Ashby here and in 'Harold and Maude' when it comes to lack of tidy conclusions and moral ambiguity; they are not always a bad thing.

| This is one of the roles that Maclaine does that I remember so well. Happy birthday, Shirley! |
