Movie Review by Jessica Film Junkie
April 16th, 2007

I haven't seen this movie since I was a kid. I remembering not liking it so much then, but I thought I would give it another shot. Unfortunately I was a pretty astute critic even as a kid.

It is a reimagining of 'The Wizard of Oz' as set in New York with an all black cast. Diana Ross plays Dorothy, Michael Jackson is the Scarecrow and Lena Horne is Glinda. The story is very cool, the sets are amazing, and the dancing is unbelievable.

However the music just doesn't have the same catchiness as the original. The only memorable song is 'East On Down The Road', this version's take on 'Follow The Yellow Brick Road'. Other than that the songs are all very literal or giving Diana Ross a chance to belt is out like a champion.

This film is far too long at over 2 hours and it loses its way at the end, with hardly any screen time for Richard Pryor as The Wiz.

A disappointing film, because it could have been so cool, but it falls so far short.

Michael Jackson is an icon, I don't care about his personal dramatics that go on. This is just all too weird though how child like this movie is and he being an accused child molester years later.
