Movie Review by Zombie Boy
December 12th, 2007

I'm afraid I'm going to have to be blasphemous once again: I don't really care for DAWN OF THE DEAD. Sure, it is an entry in an overall series that I admire greatly, but for me it is just a grand misfire.

DAWN picks up where NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD leaves off, that being a world overrun by the walking dead, creatures whose sole purpose in afterlife is to feed on the flesh of the living. After some brief stuff showing the extent of the ravaging society has taken, we end up with yet another band of survivors holding up in a mall this time, instead of a ramshackle farmhouse.

Good work is on display from all the stars, particularly Ken Foree, but after about half an hour the movie starts to drag considerably, and I start pecking corn. I understand the point was to delineate the isolation and frustration of being cast out from social mores, attempting to forge a new life while still clinging to the hope of resurrecting the old one. But it just did not work for me. From the Smurf-hued zombies to the ridiculous biker gang and pie throwing scenes, it's just one misstep after another. I personally own the Dario Argento overseas cut, ZOMBI, which is a tighter edit (as well as featuring his trademark Goblin soundtrack) but it still starts to leave me behind at some point.

I recognize that this is a favorite amongst horror fans, but I have never been able to ascertain just why. Like Dennis Miller used to say, that's just my opinion: I could be wrong.

It gets an extra star just for being part of the DEAD universe. Even for crappy movies, that carries some weight with me.

That is your opinion and you are wrong.....you suck.....j/k

I think where my love comes from this movie is when I was a kid I would pretend that I would get to take over a mall and keep all the sh*t....while killing zombies with machine guns.....AND having an unlimited supply of guns and ammo at my disposal because ironically enough there is a gun store inside the mall. To top it off, there is a helicopter available INCASE something goes wrong..

The only thing that would have sucked about the whole scenario was that there was one chick in the mall and like all the seats on Forrest's bus SHE WAS TAKEN......

I am still shocked that you dont like this one more....i mean christ your name is zombieboy.....but everyone is entitles to their opinion!!!!! Thats what MatchFlick is all about!

On another note I would love to see you review the Return of the Living Dead films, Day of the Dead and Lucio Fulci's Zombie. It is very interesting to see what you think of these films that many people know nothing about.

With all the talk of all the "dead" movies, what would you guys say is the best zombie movie ever? I'm not a huge fan, but I've always thought the original Night of the Living Dead was the best I've seen. Just wondering what true fans of the genre would pick.

I like the original night of the living dead and dawn of the dead the best....but I even liked house of the dead which is on the bottem 100 IMDB list last time I checked.......Zombies movies are my favorite horror genre.
