Movie Review by Jacob

Assistance if you please...

Just watched this movie and there is something i am curious about upon completion of watching it...people say that Godfather Part II is better than the Godfather...I'm afraid I just don't see the reason. I can see that Part II introduces a more in-depth analysis of Michael Corleone and what power can do when given to the wrong person. Michael is so complex I almost found it hard to follow and didn't really have time to sympathyze or empathyze the fellow. Maybe someone can assist me in seeing WHY Part II of the Godfather is better than Part I. Not to say it isn't a good movie because I enjoyed it but The first Godfather presented so much more depth and was a visual delight. I don't know if I feel the same for Part II.

I think a major reason for this movie being better is Di Nero. He brings so much to Vito Corleone, that in turn makes the first one even better. I also think that it shows the major differences between Vito and Michael. Vito started with noting, and never lost sight of where he came from or how important family has to be. Michael started on top, and didn't see the importance of family like his father had. Michael did the best he could, and as the "godfather" was very successful, but failed as a husband and father. You are right that there is a lot to take in. I enjoy this movie more and more, every time I see it.

ah. i see. i think i understand it now. it is more on a symbolic basis that people enjoy it. i think i can see it now. I find Michael Corleone very complex and very dark...almost an antihero that i don't think you are really MEANT to sympathiyze with yet...i found I kind of do. well thanks for clearing some o that up.

I think you just hit the nail on the head. The ability for the audience to sympathize with a character like Michael is the sign of good writing and amazing acting.

Yeah, Jacob, I wouldn't sweat it. I don't even entirely consider them separate movies. There is, in fact, a version out there where these first two movies are edited together. Yes, it stays brilliant. Just the fact that this one ends the story line begun in the first one with "That's my family, Kate, that's not me." might give it more gravity in some people's eyes. But I don't feel the need to make one better than the other.
