The Sound of Perserverance
"Sounder" the excellent film by Martin Ritt the same director of "the Spy Who Came in From the Cold" switches genres and gives us on the most powerful films from 1972.
The film follows the story of an African-American family named the Morgan's living in Depression-Era Louisiana around 1933.
Without reveling too much from the plot the acting in this film and since of desperation it evokes is a one time movie experience. Paul Winfield, Cicely Tyson and Kevin Hooks give arguably the best performances of their careers in this film.
When the father Paul Winfield is arrested and charged with a crime he didn't commit the family must persevere and go on without it's bread winner. And they do go on and find their way with a strength and dignity that you can only applaud.
The sense of the scorching heat and humidity along with a simple but effective musical score only add to enhance the performers.
